Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

Check in for weekly updates of Sharks player profiles.  Every week (sometimes more often) we will be spotlighting a Shark to put his perspective of the game and experiences as a Shark online.  With many new faces, and lots of old men the stories should offer some interesting points of view.  Be sure to check back and get to know your Bucks County Sharks...

Timmy "Mack" McCall
(Web Master Editorial)  This is Timmy's sophomore year with the Sharks and his game continues to improve.  Defensive he is very sound and manages to string groups of tackles together and is aggressive from the first marker position.  Offensively he has been working on running straight and getting a quick play of the ball.  Off the field his amusing antics keep the boys entertained, and we look forward to his continued development on and off the field.

My First Taste of Rugby...

My first taste of rugby was in the 2005-2006 “Turkey Bowl” hosted by the Hibernians. Not knowing anything about rugby I just kind of ran around like a back would in football, or at least tried to anyway. Most of the second half of the game was spent behind a tree throwing up because of the delicious Chinese food I devoured before the game, which was a big mistake. After the game I was approached by Sal and was told I should be playing rugby with grown men seeing how I was too old to play high school rugby. This is how I found out about the Sharks and rugby league.

After a season of rugby union under my belt I was yet again introduced to a new game. I must say I enjoyed league much more because there was no rucking or mauling. Everyone was very helpful in teaching me the game and also corrupting my youth. Being the physical specimen that I am I adapted quickly and fell in love with the game. In my first season we made the semi finals but lost an unfortunate game.

Now in my second season with the sharks and rugby for that matter the sharks are destined for great things. I’ve made great friends and because of the old bastards I have a lot of father figures; the type of fathers that give there kids beer and teach them to incorporate the C word into every sentence. I owe these guys a lot. They push me in practice when I am about to give up and make sure my body remains a temple. The closeness of our team CANNOT be found anywhere else in the AMNRL and I am truly proud to call myself a Shark.

Christian James
(Web Master Editorial)  This is Christian's first season with the Sharks, and his first time even playing rugby league but he has hit the ground running and has really taken command of this young Sharks offensive attack.  He systematically took apart the Axemen's defense last week and we are excited to have him on the squad.  The only draw back...he's Welsh, so when he is drinking it is nearly impossible to understand what he is saying!

Bucks County Sharks… Memoirs by Christian James

My first experience with the Bucks county sharks was somewhat not surprisingly in a bar in centre city. However it was during the soccer (or football as we call it in the UK) world cup of 2006, a tournament which England where meant to show their superiority over other soccer playing nations…… they failed to live up to their hype much to my delight as a Welshman. It was there I met a guy called Tomo, who said he had some mates back in Wales that he had played rugby with and therefore wondered if I’d be interested in playing a game of rugby when the season started. In a bit of a drunken haze I said yes, not realizing he meant rugby league not union, a sport that is not hugely popular in the welsh valleys.

The second encounter was again in the same bar this time for the super league grand final, where I was introduced to two other members of the team, both seasoned veterans and consummate professionals as well as Tomo. Everything took a turn for the worst when St Helens won the final and then an impromptu UFC type event kicked off in the bar.

Pre-season training started in April, a particularly miserable month for weather, however the constant rain reminded me of home so I felt pretty good. What did strike me was the genuine interest and knowledge the boys had for the game. As always training with a new team is difficult to start with due to the sheer number of names to remember, there is only so long people will let you get away with referring to them as “mate”, “buddy”, “pal” etc.

The end of that same month threw up a charity game with the Bulls, unfortunately we lost but I was told a lot of the boys were absent as they were still playing union so I felt pretty confident that our performance against one of the leagues most successful teams would stand the sharks in good stead for the upcoming season.

Five games into the season and we have now won two and lost three, the feeling is we are turning the corner and even some of the losses could easily have been wins due to the closeness in the score lines.

Although maybe some things are different about playing in the US compared to the UK, lots of things remain the same. There is always that strong will to win, to play well for each other. There is as always some good camaraderie between the boys in training and in the bar and the desire to share a pitcher or eleven-teen. The one thing that is slightly strange to me is changing on the side of the field.
